Cat portrait with hydrangeas in an ornate frame
Neo-trad · Colour · Photo
A fluffy white cat with bright green eyes and a pink nose sits within an ornate gold frame at the top of the design. Pink hydrangea flowers, purple blooms and green leaves fill the lower half and edges of the composition. The tattoo uses bold dark outlines with smooth shading and bright, saturated colour.

In the town of Carrow Bridge the dance hall stood above the river, and above the dance hall lived a white cat called Mab. She had come up the drainpipe the winter the mill closed, and nobody claimed her. The caretaker, Eli Tandy, fed her herrings from the Saturday fish man and said she was too proud to belong to anyone.

Every Saturday the band played the Lancers and the waltz until the floorboards sagged. Mab sat on the sill of the gallery window, below a gilt frame that had hung empty since the founder's wife was taken down for damp. Hydrangeas grew in tin buckets along the stairs, pink as the lamps, and the girls who came to dance pinned them in their hair before going down.
One night a boy named Owen Pryce came up to the gallery to hide from his mother's temper and his own clumsy feet. The frame had a portrait in it by then, a cat painted in soft white fur with green eyes, because Eli had asked a travelling painter to copy Mab for a shilling. Owen sat beneath it and said, "You've got the best seat in the house." The real cat opened one green eye and closed it again. He stayed through the last waltz, listening to the boards shift under the dancers, and Eli found him there at dawn.
"What are you doing up here?" Eli asked.
"Keeping the cat company," said Owen.
When the hall was pulled down, the frame went to a saleroom, and Owen bought it for two shillings. He hung it in his kitchen. Every June he cut hydrangeas from his garden and set them on the sill, though the cat had been dead for forty years by then, and he still said she had the best seat in the house.
