Multicoloured kitten tattoo on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A kitten sits and turns its head to the left, with a blend of colours across its head, ears and body. The shading is soft and painterly, built from loose colour washes with only light dark outlines. A thin tail trails down below the body, and the design sits on a pale forearm against a dark background.

Brother Anselm had forbidden the cat from the scriptorium the week I arrived, which is how I knew she would be there every morning after that. She came in through the gap under the north door, a grey-and-amber scrap no bigger than a loaf, and sat on the corner of the lectern as though the abbot had given her the keys to the place.

The trouble was her tail. It swept through the pots of madder, woad and ochre we kept on the sill, and by Lent every page I laid down bore a trail of stray colour across its margins. Anselm wanted her put out in the rain. I wanted to finish the Gospel of Saint Mark for the bishop's visit by Easter, and I had no spare hours for a cat's tantrums.
On the Thursday before Palm Sunday I found her asleep in the wash of my unfinished initial, paws tucked under, her tail hanging over the edge of the table. When she woke she turned her head to the left, toward the window light, and I saw what she had done: a violet smudge on one ear, a green paw print, a rose stain on her cheek where she had licked the brush. I could not paint her out. I left the cat where she was and painted around her.
The bishop never noticed the margin, but the abbot did, and he kept the page. Last I heard it hangs in the chapter house, with a small coloured kitten curled at the foot of the letter S, looking back over her shoulder as though she knew she had been the better artist.
