Fine line black ink tattoo of two hands holding a cat's cradle string, with the words NO DAMN CAT above and NO DAMN CRADLE below, on the outer thigh.

Cat's cradle hands with lettering on a thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows two hands holding a looped string pattern in a cat's cradle arrangement, drawn in thin, even black linework with no shading. The phrases NO DAMN CAT and NO DAMN CRADLE sit above and below the design in matching black capitals. The photo is taken straight on, with the tattoo centred across a bare, lightly haired leg against a patterned fabric background.

"You're holding it wrong," Dessie says without looking up from the paint tin. The fair has three nights left in Skegness, and the generator behind the string stall coughs every few minutes as if it wants paying. You have a loop of old bootlace over your fingers, twisted into the shape he showed you an hour ago, and it has become a tangle of crossings that refuses to be anything else.

"A cat's cradle wants two pairs of hands," he says, taking the loop and flicking it so the strings cross and cross again. "Everyone forgets the middle bit. You lift the cat out, and then you wonder why there's nothing to hold." He tells you his mother taught him the figure in a caravan outside Ripon, and that the card once pinned above this stall said NO DAMN CAT across the top, because a game with nothing in the middle still counts as a game.

A small boy comes up to the counter with a sixpence clenched in his fist and wants the tin whistle on the top shelf. He can't make the cradle either. You take his hands and loop the bootlace over his thumbs, then hook the middle strand with your little finger, and the lattice opens into a diamond with a pair of hands at each corner. The boy gasps. Dessie says nothing, only nods and reaches for the whistle.

Later, packing the crates, you find the card at the bottom of the box, its corners soft and the paint running into the board. Someone has written NO DAMN CRADLE underneath in careful capitals, as if they had argued the point and won. You fold the bootlace into your pocket and hold your hands out in front of you, empty, and for a second the shape is still there in the air before it goes.
