Architectural wall detail on a leg
Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A line drawing of a building wall corner, similar to a construction detail, is tattooed on the outer leg. The black linework shows wall layers, a window or door frame and a circled section marker with the number 4, while red fill marks the insulation and the cut edge. A small scale note, reading 1 1/2 inch equals 1 foot, sits beneath the drawing on a plain, light skin background.

The detail had been drawn at one and a half inches to the foot, which made everything in it larger than life, and Margaret Okonedo had never trusted a drawing that flattered its subject. She pinned the sheet to the board in the drawing office on Gresham Street and ran her thumb along the section line, past the red hatching for insulation, past the window frame that had been bricked over in 1962 and never spoken of again.

Sheet four was missing. The ringed numeral at the left of the drawing pointed to it, and the pointer went nowhere, because somebody had torn the sheet out decades ago and taken it home. Margaret spent three weeks in the basement archive among rolls of vellum that smelled of vinegar and wet coats, until a cleaner mentioned an old draughtsman called Lennart Pyle who had retired to a flat above a fishmonger's in Deptford and never returned his keys.
Pyle kept sheet four in a tobacco tin under his bed. On its back, in faded pencil, he had written a single line: the cavity is hollow, they never filled it, don't tell the client. Margaret laid it beside the new drawing and saw that the red fill stopped exactly where the old wall began, a clean edge like a lie told with a ruler.
She measured the real wall that afternoon, from the scale bar in the corner, one and a half inches to the foot, the way Pyle would have. The numbers came out true. She folded the sheet along its old crease, the way you fold a letter you mean to answer, and went down the stairs to find a ladder.
