Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A solid black ornamental frame with scrolls and a heart motif surrounds an oval panel. Inside, a cat sits in profile as untattooed skin showing through, set against a shaded background of blue, pink and black clouds with scattered orange and gold dots. Black linework forms the frame, while the background uses soft colour and blended shading.

Mrs Abernethy's galley on the coaster Harriet Lane had one cat, a grey tom called Pilot, who slept in the bread drawer and would not be moved. When the weather turned in the Minch, she would hear him yowling at the scuttle above the stove, and she knew the lads on deck were in for a hard night.

One winter he stopped eating his fish. Every evening he climbed onto the sill of the little round window and sat with his back to the lamp, looking up. The deckhands said he was counting the stars. Mrs Abernethy said he was waiting for someone to come back from the far side of the sky. She rubbed the soot off the glass so he could see better, and he stayed there until the bell for morning watch.
On the last night of the voyage the sky cleared over the Sound. The clouds were pink and blue as bruised plums, and gold sparks lay scattered through them like cinders from a grate. She saw Pilot sit up very straight, then he slipped down, rubbed hard against her ankles, and went back up to the sill. When she looked through the glass, his shape was printed on the sky, tail curled tight, with the stars showing through the middle of him.
Pilot was never seen again after the Harriet Lane came into harbour. Mrs Abernethy kept the bread drawer shut all the same, and on clear nights she still left the scuttle open a crack, in case he came down for his supper.
