Catwoman and Harley Quinn on forearms

Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two comic-style female characters are tattooed on a pair of forearms. The left figure is Catwoman in black and grey, with a whip raised and bold black outlines and smooth grey shading. The right figure is Harley Quinn in red, black and white, holding a stick, with a jester hat and clean colour fills against a pale skin background.

Marguerite Fenn had drawn the cat first, in a borrowed black ink that smelled of turpentine, because Dot insisted the villain always got the good pen. They had forty minutes before the fairground manager came round with his clipboard, and the painted board behind them was still tacky along one edge where the rain had got under the tarpaulin.

Dot wanted the jester. Dot had wanted the jester since they were nine and sold raffle tickets outside the Odeon, but Marguerite said it looked like a pudding in a hat. They argued under their breath while the gulls shouted over the harbour wall. Eventually Dot took the red pencil and drew a stick over the jester's shoulder, a long wooden thing with a split end, and said it was for knocking sense into people.

By four o'clock the booth held two figures, one black, one red, each leaning out of the frame as though they had heard a car pull up outside. The manager walked the length of the stall, tapped the cat's whip with his pen and said nothing. Then he tapped the jester's hat and laughed, a short bark, and counted their money out of a biscuit tin.

On the bus home Dot sat with her wet sleeve pressed to her knee while Marguerite flicked through the sketchbook. She found the cat's eyes had been gone over, very neatly, in red. Neither of them mentioned it. The following week the cat's whip had a little red handle.
