Two linework women with geometric hair on a calf
Geometric · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A tattoo of two female figures in black linework, one inverted above the other, with the upper figure's head built from geometric triangles. The lower figure has long flowing hair decorated with floral motifs, and the composition is linked by a thin dotted line. Mint green and red accents sit behind the figures, and the design wraps along the calf.

Mags had been told a plumb line never lies, which was the first thing Aldous Penrose said that morning, before he'd even taken off his wet coat. The brass weight hung from the rafters of the chapter house in Wrayby and trembled toward the chalk mark he'd drawn for the new font, a good four inches off the stone.

"The floor is wrong," he said, "or the ceiling is. Which would you bet on?" She looked up. Someone centuries back had painted a woman falling through the vault in shards of blue glass, her head built from small angled triangles like a broken lamp shade. Below, on the flags where the old altar had stood, lay her reflection in a shallow pool of rainwater that the sexton never mopped, hair spread wide, flowers caught in it like coins. A red sun the size of a cartwheel sat between them, half sunk in the stone.
Mags spent the afternoon measuring. Every reading came back the same: the weight pointed straight down, and the upper woman's feet pointed straight at the lower one's hands, as though they were reaching through the same well. Penrose sat on an upturned crate eating a pear and offered no help. "Stop trying to make it agree with you," he said. "Run the line between them and see where it goes."
She ran the thread from the weight to the sky and the water at once, and it didn't snap. At dusk the mint-green light through the west window slid across the floor in a slant exactly as wide as the gap, and for a moment the two women touched at the fingertips. Penrose wrote "level" in the ledger and underlined it twice. Mags knew it was a lie and didn't mind.
