The sea had taken the ring road at Wenlow the year Mara's grandmother was married, and by the time Mara was old enough to row out past the lamp posts, the jellyfish had learned the drowned town as well as any fox learns a hedge. They came in on the spring tides, pale bells as wide as cartwheels, trailing their long threads through the upper windows of the library. Nobody liked them. Everybody needed them, because they ate the blue weed that choked the pumps.

On the morning her brother failed to come back from the grain store roof, Mara took the skiff out alone and called across the water the way her grandmother had taught her, low and slow, a hum rather than a word. The eldest bell answered first. It turned its underside towards her, and she saw his green scarf snagged in the threads like a hooked fish, and beneath it a small light no bigger than a thumbnail, pulsing where the sea had no right to keep a light.

She rowed in close. The threads stung anyone who lied to them, her grandmother said, so Mara told the truth out loud: that she was afraid, that she had cracked the oar bringing the boat through the gate, that she would carry whatever they asked of her. The bell lifted its trailing arms and let the scarf go. Her brother came down the threads hand over hand, shivering and furious, and the light went out in his fist like a cold coal.

Mara hung the scarf on the nail above the door and kept the light in a jar on the sill. Each spring tide it wakes, the way a sleeping dog lifts an ear, and turns slowly towards the water, as though counting something out there that is still owed.
