I nearly didn't come to the reunion, and then Mr Okafor's card arrived with our old form room printed on it, 3B, and I found I'd been holding the envelope up to the kitchen light for ten minutes. You'll remember locker 390. It was the one by the boiler room door, the one that never shut properly, so we used to stuff it with crisp packets and each other's notes.

Here's what I haven't told anyone. Last month the caretaker's widow rang me. Her husband had kept the old locker keys in a biscuit tin, and she'd found a slip of paper folded inside with my name on it, in a hand I didn't recognise until I saw the capital C's, round as coins. It said only CCCXC. Three hundred and ninety. I sat on the kitchen floor with it for an hour.

I think it was the number of days you didn't speak to me in Year Nine. You once told me it was a fortnight, but I counted, obviously, because I'm me. I think you were keeping score on a locker door, and I think Mr Dobbs found the tally and kept it for himself, the way he kept everything. I'm not sure. Maybe he just liked counting things too.

Bring the tin, if you still have it. I'll bring the slip. We can stand by the boiler room door together and see whether it still doesn't shut.
