Nox lettering with crescent moon and stars

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo reading Nox in black serif lettering sits on a lightly tinted patch of skin against a dark red fabric background. A crescent moon curves above the first letter, and a scatter of small dots trails off to the right of the final letter. The linework is clean and thin, with the ink shown in a single dark tone and the photo framed tightly on the tattoo.

The lamp in the top room of Mrs Pellow's boarding house would not stay lit after ten, so Ada Carne learned to read by the moon coming off the Channel. Her brother Tom had taken the last of the candles to sea the week before, and the letter he left under the saucer said only that he would be back before the herring turned. Nox, the old word, was what their grandmother called the hours after midnight, when the tide made its own sound against the breakwater.

On the night the cliff path washed out, Ada climbed to the window with a tin of matches and a fistful of salt. She struck one match after another and watched the chalk of the headland flash white, then dark, then white again, until a boat answered from below with a single lantern swinging low. It came in close under the harbour wall, and Tom stood in the stern with a face the sea had worn thin.

He did not thank her. He pointed up at the sky, where the thin paring of a moon hung over the bay and a scatter of stars had come out behind the cloud. "Nobody else was looking," he said. Ada lowered the tin into the boat and kept the last match for herself, and the lamp in the top room stayed dark.
