Small geometric mark on a heel
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a bare foot showing a very small black tattoo of two crossed diagonal strokes with a short horizontal line, forming a compact geometric motif. The lines are thin and crisp, and the mark sits alone on smooth skin against a warm, softly lit background. The composition is tight, with the heel filling most of the frame and the tattoo near the centre-left.

In the kingdom of Hollin Mere, where the river split into forty channels before it reached the sea, nobody trusted a map. The mapmakers drew the land wrong every year, because the marsh moved under their ink. So the fords were marked on the stones themselves. Where a person could wade, a mark was cut: two strokes crossing like a pair of folded arms, with a single bar laid beneath them. Where the bar was missing, the water ran deep, and it was better to walk the long way round to the mill.

Brannoc, the old ford-warden, cut most of those marks with his own chisel. When the young queen's cousin drowned at a crossing the warden had missed, the council voted that every mark be chiselled away, since the stones looked like a rebuke to the court. Brannoc nodded and said nothing. That spring he went out at dawn and cut the same mark again, smaller, low on the stone where the waterline would keep it wet, so that only a person kneeling in the reeds would ever find it.
Eilis, who ground corn for the upper village, learned to kneel. She learned that a bar under the crossing meant the water would hold, and that the strokes pointed the way the current ran. When the spring flood took the bridge at Cold Ash, she went down to the river with a lamp and followed the small marks out across the drowned fields, one stone to the next, until she stood on the far bank with her skirts dripping.
The next morning the council found the bridge gone and the warden's marks still dry above the flood line. Nobody chiselled them away again.
