Celestial geometric line tattoo on lower leg
Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A vertical column of fine black linework runs down the front of a lower leg. It includes a sunburst with radiating lines at the top, a small dotted circle beneath it, two large overlapping circles with arrow shapes along a central line, and a smaller circle near the ankle that ends in a small pointed motif. The lines are crisp and delicate with stippled dots, and the design is shown in black ink on pale skin against a white cloth.

The plum trees have been dropping since Tuesday, and your uncle Ivo says the orchard is keeping its own calendar now. He hands you the plumb line without looking up, a length of cotton with a lead weight on the end, and tells you to hang it from the top rung of the ladder against the Victoria tree. The weight swings, settles, and you draw a chalk line on the bark where the string falls. He wants the rows true before the frost and the men with the cider press.

You work down the row with the ladder and the chalk, counting windfalls into a tin pail. At the bottom of the orchard, by the water butt, the old brass theodolite sits on its tripod under a sheet of corrugated iron. Ivo has taught you to read its circles, one for the ground and one for the sky, and to note where the first star clears the hedge at dusk. You write it in the ledger in pencil, because ink blurs in this damp.
On the last evening of August the star doesn't come. The line you chalked that morning has drifted a hand's width against the hedge, and when you check the ledger, the June readings show it has been drifting all along. Ivo sits on the water butt with a tin of tobacco he never opens. "The ground moves," he says. "The sky doesn't. Always trust the string." You fix the line again, slower this time, and let the weight hang until it is still.
In the morning the sun lifts over the top of the orchard exactly where the chalk says it should, a hard bright point at the end of a fan of light, and the first windfall of the season lands in the grass with a soft knock, like a clock being set.
