Planets and orbits on the upper arm
Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A cluster of planets sits on dotted orbit rings, including a ringed planet at the centre, with smaller dots scattered along the path. Thin solid lines cross the design diagonally and curve across the arm. The planets are shaded with dense stippling and the linework is fine and crisp, in black ink only against pale skin and a dark background.

My grandfather drew orbits on everything. He drew them on the backs of invoices, on beer mats, once on the steamed-up windscreen of the van while I sat in the passenger seat eating crisps. Dots for the moons, a fat smudged circle for Jupiter, and at the centre of it all Saturn, its ring a flattened oval he would go over until the biro tore the paper. "Everything out there keeps its distance," he told me. "That's what makes it findable."
I found Saturn that night without any help, low in the south-east, steady where the stars jumped. Then I looked for the small points beside it that were not stars, and the dark gap between them that I had always assumed was a fault in my eyes. The road ran straight towards the planet like a pencil line. I drove by it for an hour, keeping the yellow light just left of the bonnet the way he would have wanted, until a farm gate and a single bulb appeared where the map showed nothing at all.
