Celtic knot cat in a triangle

Black and grey · Flash

The drawing shows a stylised cat with a curled tail, its body and head woven into a triangular Celtic knotwork frame. A second rounded animal shape sits in the upper right of the triangle, with interlaced bands crossing through the design. The image uses crisp, even black outlines on a white background with no shading, and the composition fills the triangle evenly.

The gardener's boy swore the cat had been in the knot garden since before the frost, and you did not believe him until you knelt on the gravel and saw it. The box hedges were clipped into three interlacing bands, a triangle with a green cat sitting inside it, tail curled past its ear. Nobody had planted it that way. Mr Tulliver, the head gardener, had been dead nine years, and his shears still hung on a nail in the potting shed.

You had come to Ashcombe to sell the house, and the agent had said the garden was the only thing worth keeping. Each evening the cat moved one step along the hedge, so that by Thursday it had gone round the whole triangle and returned to where it began. You sat on the bench beside the old sundial, flask of tea going cold, and waited for it to finish, because leaving first seemed rude.

On Friday the frost came down thick and the box went grey. You ran your fingers along the bands and found they never ended at all. The cat was simply the knot that had decided to stay. When you pressed the sundial the moss gave under your palm, and a brass ring rose beneath it, cold as a coin from the bottom of a well.

You kept the ring in your coat pocket. On Saturday the box was clipped square again, plain as any hedge, and the cat had gone. You left the shears on their nail, locked the gate, and did not look back, though you could feel the triangle holding its shape behind you, patient as a held breath.
