Tribal dolphin design in black linework

Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash

A solid black outline drawing of a leaping dolphin, with its body filled with bold tribal-style swirls, spirals and wave motifs. The linework is thick and high contrast, with the swirls broken up by white negative space along the body and tail. The dolphin is centred on a plain white background, with no shading or colour.

The bar at Scarrow Haven had taken three boats that winter, and the harbourmaster's daughter, Nell Ashby, was the only one who would go out past the breakwater in fog. Her father said the sea wanted paying. She said it wanted watching.

One grey morning a dolphin came in on the ebb, leaping the channel markers one after another, black and sleek, its back ridged with the curling marks old fishermen cut into their oars. It turned at the buoy, flicked its tail, and swam ahead of the trawler Mercy Lane into the shallows where the sand had shifted. Nell stood in the bow and read the water wherever the dolphin broke it.

The skipper, Tobias Crane, swore he had never trusted a fish with a plan. But the dolphin kept to a line of pale water, the Mercy Lane kept to the dolphin, and they came over the bar with a hand's width to spare. When the boat was tied up, the dolphin surfaced once beside the quay, spiralled three times in the tide, and was gone.

That evening her father asked what it had wanted in return. Nell said nothing, only that she had walked the harbour wall at dusk and seen the swirls on the water's skin, pale rings opening and closing over the sandbar. By morning the channel had moved again, and out past the markers the sea was turning in a long, patient curl, as if it were drawing a sum for her to solve.
