Tribal rose design
Black and grey · Flash
A solid black stencil-like drawing of a stylised rose, built from sweeping tapered curves with a bud at the top and a long pointed stem below. The linework is bold and filled, with no shading, and the design is shown in isolation on a plain white background. It is in black ink only.

You learn the tide tables before you learn your own mother's face, because on Greyhaven Quay the sea decides who eats. Your father mended nets in the lee of the lighthouse and taught you to tie a bowline with your eyes shut. Every evening he came up the steps with the same stiff walk, salt caked to the elbows, and every evening you counted the boats that had not come back.

The summer the Marigold went missing, the harbourmaster nailed a black-painted board to the chandlery door and the whole town read it without speaking. You walked past it twice a day with a basket of bread for the widow Pell, who had taken to leaving her shutters half open so the passing could see she was still waiting. Nobody told you to stop. Nobody told you anything at all, which is how you knew the news was worse than the rumours.
In October a sailor with a split lip came off the Fenwick boat and asked for you by name. He had a scrap of oilcloth folded in his shirt, and on it, rubbed soft by weeks of wet, was a rose drawn in ink: a tall bud, a stem that dropped down like a plumb line, leaves swept out sharp as cutlasses. Your father's mark. He used to carve it into the bollards so the boys would know which mooring was his.
You did not cry on the quay. You took the oilcloth home, pinned it above the stove, and in the morning you walked down to the water with the basket still on your arm and waited for the tide to turn, the way he always told you to, because the sea gives back what it means to keep.
