The tide had already turned when Manu saw the turtle lift its head out of the lagoon, a black whorl against the grey light. His uncle had told him that turtles came back to the beach they were born on, and that the spiral at the front of the shell was a map of the way home, though Manu had never believed a map could be drawn on an animal.

He waded out with the rope still wrapped round his wrist, the way he had been told never to do. The creature did not hurry. Its flippers moved like slow oars, and where the sand was pale he could see the carved pattern of its shell rippling beneath the water, the cut-out shapes dark as holes in a canoe hull. When it reached the shallows it stopped, and he understood that it was waiting for him to decide what to do with the rope.

He untied the knot. His uncle's canoe was still on the shingle, half finished, and the paint pot sat beside it with the lid off. Manu had been told to wait until the old man had cut the spiral on the bow before carving anything of his own, but the turtle had not waited for anyone. He dipped his finger in the black paint and pressed it to the wet sand where the creature had turned, leaving a curled mark that the next wave would take.

By morning the sea had smoothed everything. His uncle asked why the paint pot was empty and Manu said nothing, because there was nothing to say that would not sound like a boy's lie. The canoe went out that week with a spiral at its prow that was not quite the same as the others, and it was the first boat that came back.
