Runic compass in a Celtic knot circle
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A symmetrical black line drawing set inside a circle of interlaced Celtic knotwork. Runic-style symbols radiate from a central knot along eight lines, forming a compass-like arrangement. The linework is uniform and the composition is balanced, with white space around the outer border.

Settle down, you lot, before the generator gives up and the carousel stops halfway round. Mind the caravan step, Ada, it's loose. Now, you've all seen the board painted by the candy floss stall, the one with the rope ring and the spokes like a cartwheel. My great-grandmother's great-grandmother drew that shape on a scrap of sheepskin in the winter of 1851, and she carried it stitched inside her coat for the rest of her life.

Her name was Mirren Vane, and her man Tobiah went out after eels on the Ouse one November evening and never came back to the jetty. The lamp-lighter swore he saw the punt drift past the sluice with nobody at the tiller. Mirren got the marks from an old Dane selling pins at Michaelmas fair, who told her the lines were sea-words for the ways home. So she walked the dykes with that sheepskin open in her palm, and every spoke pointed somewhere different. One to the church. One to the mill. One down into the reeds, where the ground went soft and grey.
She didn't follow the church, nor the mill. She followed the reeds, and at the end of them she found Tobiah sitting on an upturned punt, mending a net with fingers gone white from the cold and humming a tune she'd forgotten she loved. He looked up and asked what had kept her so long. She said the compass had only ever shown the road, and the walking was hers to do.
When she turned the skin over that night, the knotwork ring on the back had no join anywhere, and she understood that all the roads she'd walked were one road going round. She sewed the skin shut and never opened it again. Right, the carousel's moving. Off you go, and if your own compass ever points you back to the jetty, don't argue with it.
