Oda had been unpicking the same cord since dawn, because the master rope-maker of Carrowmere would not accept a binding with a loose end. "Find where it starts," he said, tapping the coil with his pipe, "and you may go home."

She had three hanks of tarred hemp, each a different grey, and a pattern her grandmother had scratched on a slate: three loops that passed over and under one another until they made a rounded triangle, the way the drowned bells of the harbour made a ring at low tide. Her grandmother had called it the knot that keeps three sisters from quarrelling. Oda had never known whether that was true, only that no one in the family had ever found its beginning.
She worked through the night with a lamp wedged in a gull's skull. Every time she followed one band to its end, it slid under another and came up on the far side of the triangle, the way a path bends back on itself in fog. By the third bell she had stopped looking for an end and started counting crossings instead. Thirty-six. Always thirty-six, and always the same cord.
When the master came at dawn she held the coil up to the window. "No start," she said. "No finish. It is one line going round three times."
He turned it over, frowned, then laughed. "Then it will hold the bridge," he said, "because nothing in it can slip."
