Celtic knotwork and scale tattoos on both hands

Blackwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands rest palm down with their fingertips meeting, forming a heart-like shape against a plain black background. The left hand and wrist carry interlaced Celtic knotwork in black ink with grey shading, while the right hand and fingers show a dense fish or dragon scale pattern that continues up the forearm. The soft, even lighting picks out the shading and skin texture, and the image is composed to centre the hands.

The fair came to Thornwick the week the river froze, and with it came a man called Osric Pell who sold nothing but string. He laid his cloth on the cobbles beside the hoopla stall and tied knots for a penny a time, each one tighter than the last, and nobody in the village could undo them.

Mara, the miller's youngest, came back every evening with a fistful of pennies and a length of cord she had not yet managed to loosen. "Teach me," she said. Osric only shook his head and pointed at the river, where a grey pike as long as a man's arm turned slowly beneath the ice, its scales catching the lamplight like coins in a purse.

On the last night he gave her a knot that had no end. "Hold it in your left hand," he said, "and whatever you tie with your right will hold until the thing you tied it to lets go of you." She laughed and took it. When the fair packed up at dawn she found the cord coiled inside her sleeve, still warm, and the pike gone from under the ice.

In later years she kept a stall of her own on the same cobbles, tying knots for anyone who asked. She never once let go of that first cord, and when the river thawed in spring she could still hear it, faintly, turning under the water.
