Hand tattoos with spider and crescent moon
Blackwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands rest palm down on a white surface, covered with black tattoos including a spider, a pair of scales, a dagger, a crescent moon, a chain and several small triangles, stars and an eye. The linework is solid black with bold fills and some fine detail on the fingers. The white background and white painted nails keep the focus on the dark ink.

Dear Ottilie, the spider has come back to the scriptorium window, the one Brother Anselm calls patience and the novices call a nuisance. I have swept its web away every morning since Lent, and every morning it has rebuilt the same thread between the ink shelf and the lectern, as straight as a ruled line.

Anselm keeps the accounts of the house in a black ledger with a clasp shaped like a crescent. Each night before compline he weighs the day on a brass pair of scales, a loaf against a grievance, a candle against a kindness, and records the result in small triangles down the margin. He painted the eye above the refectory door in the spring, and he pricks tiny stars into the vellum with a bodkin, so the pages look like a sky seen at the wrong hour.
Last Thursday I found the scales lying on the open ledger with one pan empty and the other holding a single white thread, fine as a nail paring. Nobody will admit to moving them. Anselm only tapped the chain of his rosary against the desk and said the spider always knows which side is heavier.
Now I paint a cross on the doorframe each evening with the chalk from the cellar, two bars and a long stroke, because my hands shake too much for anything finer. The spider watches from its corner. I have stopped sweeping. Pray for me, and pray for the brass pans, which I think are finally level.
