Celtic knotwork star on the chest

Geometric · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A large five-pointed star filled with interlaced Celtic knotwork, with a central circular knot motif. The outline is solid black, and the knotwork is rendered in lighter grey lines and shaded grey areas against darker shading. The star sits centrally on the skin, which fills the frame.

You have been working the same loop of tarred cord since the lamps were lit, and still the star will not close. Your grandmother said it would not, when you were small enough to sit under her table and count the crossings. Each time the strand comes round to a point it slips beneath itself and carries on, the way the wind carries on over the top of Hollin Wood without once touching the village.

Outside, the forest stands at the end of the lane like a crowd waiting to be let in. Men from the mill bring you the outer cords, grey as dishwater, and ask whether the charm will keep the foxes off the hens. You tell them yes, because it is easier than explaining that a knot with no beginning cannot be untied, only followed.

On the third night of the frost you find where your grandmother's thread starts. It is tucked beneath the centre circle, pulled so tight that nobody would think to look. You work at it with a bodkin until the knot gives. The whole star loosens into one long rope, and you see that it was never a star at all, only a single path walked round and round until it looked like a shape.

You coil it on the church step. By morning the rope has frozen into a ring the size of a cartwheel, and the children who come to see it trace the points with their mittens and cannot find where it begins. You leave it there for them.
