Double-outlined star on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large five-pointed star is tattooed on a forearm in bold black linework, drawn as a double outline with a narrow gap between the two lines. The skin inside the star is unshaded and appears reddened and slightly raised. The arm rests on grey fabric against a dimly lit, plain background.

You learn to read the harbour wall at Skerrow before you learn to read the tide tables. The gulls go quiet a half hour before the boats come in, and your father says that's the sea making up its mind. This morning it has made up its mind against the Morag Ann, which lost her steering off the Ness and limped home on a borrowed rope with her hull still ticking from the strain.

You spend the afternoon on the slip with Davie Rhind, scraping weed from the keel while he tells you the same story about the Ness storm of '98 that he always tells, the one where the wave was as tall as the lighthouse and nobody believes him. You don't mind. His hands are steadier than yours will ever be and he lets you hold the wire brush like it matters.
When the light goes you walk out to the end of the pier alone. The old chart nailed inside the net shed has a star drawn over the reef, a double line of pencil that somebody kept going over until the paper wore thin. Nobody in Skerrow will tell you who made it. Tomorrow you'll take the Morag Ann out past it with your father at the tiller, and you will steer by that star, the way the men before you did, and you will not look back at the wall where the gulls have gone silent.
