Four-pointed star on upper back
Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large four-pointed star with an inner diamond is tattooed centrally on the upper back, with the figure's head and neck visible at the top of the frame. The star is drawn in bold outlines with soft grey shading that gives the points a slightly three-dimensional, angular look. The image is shot straight on and the ink is entirely grey and black against the skin.

The night the power failed across the whole of Salford, Maggie Oduya was the only one on the fourth floor of the old Ordnance annexe who still knew how to read a bearing without a screen. Her torch was clamped in her teeth and her pencil was behind her ear, and below us the streets had gone the colour of wet slate. I had come up to the roof with a flask of tea because the lift had quit at nine, and I found her kneeling on the lead flashing with a sheet of tracing paper pinned under a brick.

"Four points," she said around the torch. "Every map ever made starts with four, whatever the wind says. North, south, east, west, and the rest is just people arguing about the middle." She drew a line from the corner of the paper to the chimney stack and then another, until the lines crossed inside a little square. "That's where you are when you've stopped moving. Nobody tells you that part."
I asked her what the square was for. She said it was the room the points had been pointing at all along, and that the old surveyors used to scratch one into the back of their field books so they would know, after a long march, which way they had come. Then the streetlights came back, all at once, and the whole city flickered into its grid below us like a sheet of graph paper being shaken out.
Maggie folded the tracing up small and put it in my coat pocket without asking. "Keep that," she said. "You'll want to know where the middle is when they start moving the roads again."
