Every night the long ward corridor at Saint Ebba's ran the same way, and every night Nurse Mairead Doyle counted the doors with her fingers. Forty-one of them, and a fire door at the end that never shut properly. She had learned the building the way her grandmother had learned the bog road, by touch and in the dark, with a string of beads in her apron pocket to keep her hands busy.

The beads had come from a market stall in Kilkenny, bought in a bad winter. Each one stood for an hour she had got through. Some were pink glass and some were green, and the chain they hung from was thin enough to slip into a pocket. The charm at the top was a little silver key that nobody had ever given her a lock for.

On a night in February a boy in bed nine woke crying for a bird he said was sitting on his blanket. The sister said there was no bird. Mairead went in anyway and found a grey feather lying on the sheet, soft as breath. She told him that birds came to ward windows when someone was ready to be carried home, then hooked the feather onto the lowest bead so he could see it from his pillow. He slept.

In the morning she unhooked it and gave it back to him, and his mother carried him out to the car in the grey light. Mairead never again counted the doors with her fingers. She counted the beads instead, and found there were always enough.
