Small arrow tattoo on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A small black arrow with a fletched tail and a simple arrowhead runs horizontally across the side of the ribcage. The linework is thin and even, with solid black ink and no visible shading. The warm skin tone and pale background keep the tattoo as the clear focal point, with a mint lace bralette above and light wash denim with studded detailing below.

The Harrow and Vell Travelling Show had been going down the lanes of Somerset for forty years, and by the wet September of the year the elephant died, there were more empty fields than paying faces. Mabel Quick was the last of its archers. She kept one arrow in a leather case, fletched with three grey feathers from a goose that had belonged to her mother, and she did not waste it.

Mr Vell wanted the big top sold for scrap and the caravans sold for sheds. He said a show that could not fill a barn had no business being a show. Mabel said nothing. She walked to the far edge of the field where the hawthorn grew thick and set a tin plate on a post. Then she drew the bow and let the arrow go, and it went wide, over the ditch and the stubble and the stile, and dropped somewhere beyond the wall of the Ashby farm.

The farm's boy, Tom Ashby, found it at dusk. He was seven and had never seen a circus, only the posters pasted to the chapel door. He brought the arrow back across the field in both hands, carefully, the way you carry a thing that might still be warm.

Mabel took it back and thanked him, and gave him the tin plate to keep. The next morning the whole parish came over the stile to see who had shot so far, and they paid their pennies at the gate. Mr Vell sold nothing that year. The arrow went back into its case, and the horse stayed, and the show is still on the road, though nobody can say for certain which lane it will turn into.
