In the fishing town of Skerrow, the boarding house on Gull Lane took in widows, tinkers and anyone the harbour master had no use for, at a shilling a night. Mabel Quayle kept the lamp in the front window. Her father had told her the sea gives back what it takes, but only to those who keep a light burning long enough for it to see the way home.

A lodger came in October with a salt-stiff coat and a tin trunk full of rope ends. He asked for the room under the eaves, the one that looked straight down the harbour wall, and he paid a week in advance. Each evening he sat on the sill and read the same slim book aloud under his breath, a line at a time, as if he were checking that it still held together. When Mabel asked what he searched for, he only said he had been looking for a shore for a long while, and that he was not particular about which one.
The fog came in the second week of November, thick as wool, and the Brightwater did not come back on the tide. Mabel stood at the window with the lamp until her arms ached. Near midnight the lodger came down the stairs in his coat, took the lamp gently from her hands and carried it out onto the wall. He held it up over the water and did not say a word.
In the morning the fog had lifted. The Brightwater lay in the shallows below the lighthouse with her sails furled. Mabel found the lodger's room empty, the trunk shut, and the slim book open on the sill to a page with one line underlined in pencil, and beneath it, in the same slanting hand, a note addressed to her: keep the lamp trimmed.
