Small black cross on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small, simple black cross is tattooed on the inner forearm near the wrist. The lines are thin and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The photograph is a close, slightly angled shot of the upper body, with the face cropped out of frame and the tattoo placed low on the right of the image.

The reunion was held in the old schoolhouse at Hollin Bridge, the year the roof was finally mended, and everyone who had sat in its rows came back to stand in the same draughty hall and eat sausage rolls off paper plates. Mrs Tennant, who had taught them all their letters, was there in a coat too heavy for June, asking after people by their first names as though they had been gone a week rather than forty years.

Nobody remembered who had drawn the cross on the back wall of the cloakroom. It was small, no longer than a hand, cut into the lime plaster with a nail or a compass point, and the caretaker had painted over it twice. Each time it came back through the paint, thin and black, as if the wall had decided to keep it. Old Walter Pim said a boy had made it to mark where the bell rope snapped in 1961, and that nobody was hurt, which was luck. Others said it was older than the school.

On the last evening, when the trestle tables were stacked and the lamps turned low, Mrs Tennant asked for the chalk. She drew a line from the cloakroom door to the stove, then another crossing it, and told them that wherever two lines crossed, someone who had been away would always find their way back. Nobody argued. They walked out under the lamps and left the door open behind them.

When the caretaker came to lock up, the chalk had already been swept away, but the cross on the wall was there, sharp as it had ever been, and a single set of wet footprints led from it to the gate.
