Wildflower bouquet on a calf
Botanical · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A bouquet of wildflowers runs up the lower leg, including a red poppy, white blooms, yellow flower spikes, blue delphiniums and purple pansies, with green leaves and a pale pink bud at the base. The linework is fine and dark, with soft grey shading that gives the petals and leaves depth. The bouquet fills the calf from ankle to just below the knee, set against a plain cream wall and bare wooden floor.

The rain came in March, which nobody on the Tonopah road had seen in eleven years, and by the second week the verges had gone red with poppies. Dad would have called it showing off. I pulled the van onto the gravel outside Cutter's Well and sat with the engine ticking, watching two jackrabbits pick their way through a field of blue lupins that hadn't existed on Tuesday.

Pearl Ocampo ran the petrol station at the junction and didn't look up from her crossword when I came in. "You're the seed girl," she said. "Your dad stopped here before you could walk. He used to say the desert was a bad place to keep a promise." She slid a paper cup of coffee across the counter. "He'd be cross you're driving slow."
I drove slower after that. I stopped at every bend where the colour pooled, cutting stems with the pocketknife he'd given me and wrapping them in damp newspaper. Delphiniums in the ditches, pansies like spilt velvet under the creosote bushes, one stubborn white bloom I couldn't name and didn't try to.
At the bottom of the Cutter's Well pass stood a wooden cross with a jam jar nailed beside it, dry and empty for years. I filled it from the water bottle in the footwell, pushed the bouquet in, and watched the poppies lean over the glass as if they had been waiting to be asked.
