Chandelier tattoo on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of an ornate chandelier with a long chain at the top and tiered arms, candle-style lights and hanging bead strands below. The linework is fine and detailed, with light shading and stippled texture in the metalwork. The design is centred on the outer upper arm against a black vest, with a blurred studio background.

Dear Mr Achterberg, I write because the chandelier in the Assembly Room has begun to sway on its own, and the housekeeper says it is the cold that makes the chain sing. The house has been shut since the Lady Eleanor's funeral in March, and there is no one left to light the candles but me. I climbed the ladder yesterday with a box of tapers and a cloth for the crystal drops, and I counted them, as you asked me to count everything. Forty-two beads on each strand, nine arms, and one missing from the lowest tier where the glass has gone cloudy as milk.

While I stood on the top rung, the snow came against the tall windows so thick that the garden disappeared, and the only light in the room was the one I had made myself. The candles threw their small shadows up the ceiling and over the plaster roses, and for a moment the whole frame looked like a great black spider holding its breath above me. I did not fall, though I thought I might. I wiped the last arm clean and lit it, and the drops began to throw little coins of light across the floorboards, slowly, like something being counted back to me.
The missing bead is in my coat pocket now. I found it caught in the wool of the dust sheet, and I am sending it to you with this letter because it belongs to the set and I cannot in good conscience keep a piece of a house that is not mine. Please tell me what to do with the ladder. I will wait for your reply before I light the candles again, though I suspect the chandelier will not wait for me.
