Changed for good script and masked heart frame on thigh

Lettering · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows black cursive script reading Changed for good across the top, with a larger heart-shaped baroque frame below. Inside the frame is a black mask with yellow-green fill, and a red gem sits at the top of the frame. The linework is bold and the frame uses shaded greens and yellows, with the script in solid black.

Dear Marnie, the trough froze solid again last night, so I spent the first hour of light beating the ice with the flat of the shovel while the ewes stood about looking personally offended. Dad says the lean-to needs mucking out before Thursday. I said we'd see. You'll notice I'm still writing in pencil, because the ink went stiff in the cold and I'm not walking to the stove to thaw it.

The playbill came in the same post as your Christmas card, folded twice and smelling of London. I'd forgotten how you used to stand on the hay bales and sing at the hens, and how I used to tell you to keep your voice down before Mum heard. Now you're on a poster at the Harrow Street Playhouse with a green face under a black mask and a red stone set at the crown of it like a bead of cherry jam. Everyone in the village has asked me whether it's really you. I tell them the mask does most of the work.

Here is what I haven't told anyone. Reading the song list printed on the back, I found the line you'd underlined, the one about being changed for good, and I was furious, because you have never once stayed changed for anything. You left the goats, you left me, and you came home at Christmas talking about vowels. Then I thought of the girl who sat on the gate beside me, and I wondered whether she ever went anywhere at all, or only got louder.

I've pinned the playbill above the tack room door, between the feed chart and the calendar. When the ewes start lambing in March I'll look at it while I pull the cold ones out of the straw. Write back properly this time, not on the back of an invoice. Tell me what the mask looks like up close. Love, Hetty.
