Cherries forming a heart
Botanical · Colour · Flash
Two glossy red cherries sit side by side, their green stems curling up and meeting at the top to form a heart shape. The drawing uses smooth coloured shading, with white highlights on the fruit and soft blue shadows beneath. The cream background and centred composition present the design on its own, as on a flash sheet.

The orchard at Lowe Farm had not given a cherry in nine winters, so when Ada Penrose found two of them hanging from the old black tree on the feast of Saint Lucy, she stood in the frost with her boots going white and did not touch them for a long time.

They were hard and red as sealing wax, and their stems had grown together. Each stalk had curled up off its fruit and bent toward the other until the two tips met at the top in a loop, like a heart drawn by someone in a hurry. Her grandmother used to say that the tree kept count of every quarrel on the land and would not fruit for a house that was owed. Ada had been owed nothing by anyone for nine years, and she had said so often enough at the market that the whole valley knew it.
The quarrel was over the wall between Lowe Farm and Hale's, a stone wall that had fallen twice and been rebuilt by two families, each refusing to be the first to lift a stone. Mercy Hale had been Ada's closest friend until the spring her father moved the boundary post a yard into the orchard. Ada picked the cherries, wrapped them in a handkerchief against the cold, and walked across the white field to the gap in the wall where neither of them had stood since.
Mercy was at the gate with a bucket of ash for the path. She saw the handkerchief and then saw Ada's face, and set the bucket down without a word. Ada held out the cherries, still joined by their stalks. Mercy took the loop between two fingers and lifted it, and the fruit swung and knocked softly together. Neither of them said who was owed what. They went back for the wall stones that afternoon, and by dark the gap was closed.
