Cherry blossom branch line drawing
Botanical · Colour · Flash
The drawing shows a branch with two open cherry blossom flowers, each with five petals, stamens and a central pistil, and two closed buds on thin stems. The linework is a single uniform pink outline with no shading, and the flowers are arranged diagonally across a plain white background. The composition is simple and self-contained, with the stems meeting in a loose cluster at the lower left.

The cutting lasted four hundred miles before the first bud split, somewhere past the dry lake where the road gives up pretending to be a road. I had it wrapped in wet newspaper on the passenger seat, and every time the tyres dropped off the tarmac I lifted a hand to steady the paper like a nurse minding a drip. Dad would have laughed. A cherry tree in Nevada, he'd have said, you might as well grow penguins.

The man at the filling station in Tonopah sold me a bottle of water and asked what I was carrying. I told him blossom. He looked at the soggy bundle, then at the sky, which was the colour of a cheap ashtray, and said nothing for a while. Then he asked whether it was the pink kind. I said yes. He nodded as though that settled a bet he'd made with someone who wasn't there.
Hal, the two flowers have opened fully now that I've stood the cutting in a jam jar on the motel sill. Five petals each, the way Mum used to count them out along the front room windowsill in Lancaster. I don't think it will take. The woman at the desk says the desert gets into everything, and she may be right, but I have never once in my life been able to leave a thing alone when it was trying to flower.
Tomorrow I'll drive on to the coast and put it in the wet ground behind the house you said I could never rent. If it dies, I'll tell you it was the road. If it lives, you'll have to come and see it for yourself, and bring the good secateurs.
