Cherry blossom and lavender watercolour leg tattoo
Botanical · Calf · Colour · Photo
Pink cherry blossom branches climb up both lower legs, with purple lavender spikes rising on the right leg and a green stem running down the left. The flowers are outlined in dark ink and softened by loose, bleeding splashes of yellow, orange, blue and green that mimic watercolour paint. The tattoo is shown in colour against a dark leather surface, with the feet and ankles in frame.

Sit down, and keep your boots off the wet bench. You want the story of the south wall? Then listen, because I only tell it once a year, when the cherry goes over. Your grandfather's mother planted that tree the spring the lane was resurfaced, and it grew crooked, leaning out over the gate the way she leaned over every fence in Marlow Cross to hear what was said.

Beside it she put lavender, a row of plain grey-stemmed plants that wouldn't flower for her, sulking in the shade. Every June she went out with the secateurs and told them off. The cherry did better. It dropped its pink all over the path, and the lavender took offence and sulked harder. Some years the spikes went nearly black, and some years the bees wouldn't come near. The neighbours said she'd made a mess of the bed. She said the bed was making a mess of her.
Then came the spring the paint man stayed. He was doing the Hallams' shed a colour nobody could name, yellow going into green, and he rinsed his brushes in our water butt. The water ran off in streaks of orange and blue, and the cherry dropped a handful of petals straight into it. He laughed and said it looked like a watercolour. She told him to get out of her garden before she made him into a border.
The next June the lavender came up thick and purple as a bruise, and the cherry hung pink over it, and nobody said a word about who was sulking now. I still don't know if she meant it kindly. I think she was just pleased the thing had finally been made into a picture. Pass me that trowel, will you. The lane's showing blossom again.
