Purple and orange roses with swirls on forearms
Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two forearms are shown side by side, each with a large rose in colour: a lilac purple rose on the left arm and a peach to yellow rose on the right. Black ornamental swirls and small white dots surround both roses, and a grey banner with the word FOREVER and smaller lettering sits beneath the left arm's design. The shading is soft around the petals, with bold black linework in the swirls and a plain, light background of skin.

You were the one who mixed the lilac, because Mother Ysolde trusted no other hand with the violet. On the morning of the spring tithe you sat on the cold step of the Hesk dye-house with a dish of ground iris and a cracked cup of milk, waiting for the bell that meant the betrothed had reached the causeway.

Two of them came up that day, a miller's girl called Tamsin and a tanner's son called Abel, and neither would look at the other. Ysolde painted the first rose on Tamsin's arm in lilac, the petals soft as breath on glass, then sent you to do the peach rose on Abel, who flinched at the brush and laughed at himself until he was quiet again. You drew the black swirls with a goose quill, curling them like the tails of startled birds, and dotted white through them where the morning light fell across the table.
The banner was last. Ysolde had you letter FOREVER beneath both roses in the old Hesk hand, and then, because the law said a pledge needed a second line, she told you to write the small words underneath without asking why. Tamsin read them and went pale. Abel read them and laughed so hard he had to sit down on the step beside you.
Years later you saw a grey banner on a pair of cracked wrists at the Vell market, the ink gone soft, the big word still plain. The little line had washed out, but you remembered it. It had said unless the tide is high, and the tide, as every fisherman in Hesk will tell you, is never low for long.
