Pink blossoms on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Two arms are shown against a plain white background, each carrying a pink flower tattoo. The larger cluster on the upper forearm combines several soft-edged blossoms with small yellow-gold leaf shapes and dark accent strokes, while a smaller single bloom sits lower on the second forearm. The shading is soft and wash-like, with blended pink and purple tones and small dark dots for detail, and the composition is cropped close to the skin.

Dear Ada,

The cherry Father planted by the boathouse has finally come into flower, though you would never know it from the mainland post. The wind off the Minch has been at it all week. Every petal it tore loose came flying up the cliff path and stuck to the lantern glass, so that when I climbed up at dusk to light the wick I was looking out through a veil of pale pink, soft at the edges, as if someone had washed the sea with a wet brush.

I have been keeping the logbook as you asked. Tuesday, fog until noon. Wednesday, a seal on the slipway, watching me hang the washing with the look of a magistrate. Thursday, four petals drifted into the oil store and I swept them out with the dustpan, then found one still caught on my sleeve, gone the colour of old wine. I did not know whether to laugh or to be sorry for it.

The mail boat comes on Friday. I have packed the gold-leaf paper you sent last winter, the pot of ink that never blots, and a single bloom pressed flat between two pages of the almanac. I am keeping the tree alive by hand if I must, with a bucket and no sense, so do not tell Mother how much water it is getting.

Come in the summer, if the boat allows. The beam will sweep across the water every nine seconds and you can count them with me while the petals go on falling, slow as anything, into the dark sea below.
