Pink magnolia branch on a calf

Botanical · Calf · Colour · Photo

A branch of pink magnolia blooms and orange-brown buds wraps up the outer lower leg, with the largest flower open near the middle of the calf. The petals use soft, blended pink shading with lighter highlights and darker red-pink edges, giving a painterly, watercolour effect. The plain lavender background keeps the focus on the tattoo.

Mind the step, that board's been loose since the war, and don't sit on the piano lid like Dora did, she never got it back in tune. Right. Where was I? The branch, yes.

The magnolia came up from the Hallam allotments wrapped in a wet sack on the back of Ada Pinnock's bicycle, three weeks before the Whitsun dance at the Corn Exchange. Nobody had planted a magnolia in that town, the soil was too chalky for it, but Ada's brother had grafted one against his garden wall out of pure spite, he said, and it chose to open the week he was told he couldn't go to the dance. Pink as a boiled sweet at the edges, paler in the middle where the lamplight got into it, and buds gone soft and orange at the tips.

The band was three fiddles and a man on the spoons. Harold Penrose, who had two left feet and a waistcoat full of nerve, asked Ada for the waltz. She said she'd dance with whoever had brought the flower in, and Harold had carried the bough up the Hallam road himself, so that was that. They spun until the petals began to drop off the branch onto the boards, each one a little pink boat the couples stepped around, and nobody swept them up. Ada said afterwards she couldn't tell whether the floor was tilting or she was.

The Corn Exchange is a bingo hall now. The floor's been relaid twice. But if you lift the third board by the stage door you'll find one petal pressed flat under the varnish, and it's still pink. Harold swore that was the only thing in the building that never lost its tune. Now, who's getting up to dance, because I am not doing it on my own.
