Cherry blossom and rosette flash sheet
Japanese · Mixed · Flash
The sheet shows six black outline drawings of flower designs on white. The top left drawing is a five petalled cherry blossom with a stamen at the centre, and the other designs use overlapping loops, circles and petal shapes arranged in symmetrical rosettes. The linework is clean and even, with faint blue, orange, red and green fringes along some edges, and each design is set separately with plenty of white space.

You are the third draughtsman in four generations to hold the seal-book of Ardemont, a kingdom with no coastline on any map and no river that ever flooded. Your predecessor left you a tin of brass compasses, a pot of carmine ink, and one rule: no bloom leaves the Hall unless its petals were drawn by hand that same morning.

Each spring the envoys come asking for a flower. A rosette of overlapping loops for the wool guild, a ring of circles for the salt merchants, a five-petalled blossom with a gold-wire stamen for the convent at Sel. You work at the long table under the north window, where the light stays even, and you learn to leave a sliver of white between one petal and the next, because the old masters said ink that touches ink goes grey in damp weather.
In the seventh year a girl named Isaure arrives with a summons from the tower. The Queen wants a bloom that closes completely, no gap anywhere, to seal the eastern gate for good. You spend three nights with the compasses. Every circle meets its neighbour exactly, every loop folds into the next, and by dawn the sheet looks finished and dead, like a coin pressed flat.
You carry it up anyway. The Queen holds it to the lamp, traces one petal with a fingernail, and laughs softly. "Then the wind will have to come round," she says, and sends you back down with an order to open a single gap in every design in the kingdom. By the next thaw the sheets are pinned to every door in Ardemont, and each petal, every one of them, has a small white opening at its tip where the air gets through.
