Daisy flower line drawing
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows a single open daisy seen from above, with a dense ring of elongated petals surrounding a textured, dotted centre. The petals are outlined in fine, dark lines and shaded with light hatching that suggests depth and curvature. The drawing is monochrome, on a plain white background, with the flower centred in the frame.

The 6.42 was running forty minutes late, so Ruth had time to finish pricing the bucket of daisies by the newsagent's door. Three pounds a bunch, or two for the ones with bent necks. She tugged the elastic off a bundle and shook the stems straight, the white heads bobbing like a row of small lamps.

A man in a grey coat stood at the edge of the concourse, pretending to read the departures board. He came over at twenty past seven and asked for one flower, not a bunch. When she held it out he pulled a petal off, then another, murmuring under his breath the way children did in the school playground. Ruth had seen plenty of men buy flowers at this station. Most of them were late for somebody.
"Loves me," he said, and the last petal dropped onto the tiles. "Loves me not." He looked at the bare stub in his fingers and laughed. "Odd number. Good luck or bad, I never remember which."
"Depends who's waiting," she said.
He pulled one more petal and tucked it into his top pocket instead, paid with a coin far too big for the bucket, and walked off towards the platform barrier holding the yellow centre up like a torch. Ruth swept the fallen petals into her palm and tipped them in the bin. The board flicked over: the 6.42 now showing platform four, arriving. She put the remaining daisies back in the bucket and wrote a new price on the card, one pound more, because the platform was already filling with people who looked as if they needed something to hold.
