Step by step floral swirl design drawing
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A sheet of six pairs of black line drawings that build up a flower with a spiral centre, five rounded petals and curling scrolls. Each stage adds detail, from a small spiral and dotted ring to a full bloom with fine hatched petal lines and flowing swirls. The drawings are in clean black ink on white paper, arranged in two columns with arrows showing the direction of the scrolls.

Aunt Shirin had drawn the first spiral in biro on the back of a gas bill, and she was still at it when the kettle boiled over behind her. Nadia wiped the ring of water off the oilcloth with her sleeve and kept her eyes on the paper, because the old woman's hand was steady in a way her own never had been. The dotted ring came next, one dot for each guest who had asked whether the henna would stain for the wedding. Then the petals, five of them, each one a little fatter than the last, as if they had been well fed. Shirin tapped the sheet with her pen. "Now the hatching. Fine lines, like rain on a window. You don't rush rain." Nadia's cousin was getting married on Saturday and had asked for a single bloom on the back of her hand, nothing fussy, and the cone of henna in Nadia's bag had already dried twice in the drawer.
She drew the scroll that curled out from the petals, then another that tried to climb over the first and had to be coaxed back down. Shirin watched without speaking, which was how Nadia knew she was doing it properly. At the end of the sheet the last swirl would not close. It ran on past the margin, past the edge of the bill, and off onto the bare wood of the table. Shirin looked at it for a long moment. "Leave it," she said. "Something should be left open."
