Cherry blossom branch design
Japanese · Mixed · Flash
A branching twig with black ink lines carries several five-petalled pink-red blossoms with dark centres and stamens, plus a few drifting petals. The linework is bold and black with soft red gradient shading inside the flowers, giving a painterly look. The design sits on a plain white background, with the branch running diagonally from the lower left to the upper right.

The old cherry in Abel Foy's yard had been dying for three winters, and nobody in Harrowell expected it to flower. Yet on the first Sunday in April it came out all at once, as if someone had argued with it in the night. By noon the lane behind the chapel was pink to the kerb, and the postman had given up trying to keep the petals off his satchel.

Abel had grafted a single twig from it onto a young plum the spring before, more out of stubbornness than hope. Now he stood at the back gate with a handsaw in one hand and a jar of wax in the other, looking at the branch that had taken cleanly from the plum's side. Five blossoms, bold as ink, their centres dark and bristling. He could not remember the last time something he tried had worked on the first attempt.
His daughter Ruth came out with two cups of tea and stopped on the step. She had come home from Birmingham in February with a suitcase and no explanation, and in six weeks they had not once spoken about the telegram that had sent her away. She looked at the branch, then at the petals drifting across the flagstones, and said nothing for a while.
'It'll want cutting back,' she said at last. 'Else it'll take all the sap.' Abel nodded and did not lift the saw. He picked a petal off the step, turned it over, and set it on her palm. 'It doesn't need cutting to be useful,' he said. 'It only needs somebody to stand under it long enough.' Ruth closed her fingers round the petal and sat down beside him, and the tea went cold between them.
