Cherry blossom branch sketch
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing of a slender branch carrying several open five-petalled blossoms and closed buds, with thin twigs extending across the page. The linework is fine and controlled, with soft graded shading along the trunk and petals to suggest form. The image is black and grey on a plain white background, with the branch arranged diagonally across the composition.

The branch came off the orchard wall at Hadley Junction the week the line closed for resignalling, and by Thursday it was standing in a jam jar beside the tea urn on platform two. Maud Pelham, who ran the refreshment hatch, said nobody had asked her permission, but she was not going to throw out something that had come through the fence on its own.

Tom Ashby, the junior porter, found it useful for the wait. Between the 6.14 and the replacement bus he sat on an upturned crate with a stub of pencil and sketched it on the back of a spare timetable. He worked slowly, the way his grandfather had taught him to draw a locomotive, starting with the long diagonal of the trunk and letting it fork wherever it wanted. The blossoms he left until last, five petals each, shaded lightly underneath, because that was where the flower held its shape.
By the time the signals were back, the petals on the real branch had browned at the edges and dropped into the water like small coins. Tom held the drawing up against the window. The twigs ran past the margin, and he had not meant them to. Maud leaned over his shoulder and said the buds at the bottom would open in spring, whether or not anyone was still at the junction to see it.
He folded the timetable into his coat pocket. When the first train came through on the Monday, the arms lifted one after another down the line, and he found himself watching the jar instead of the track. One of the closed buds, he noticed, had split at the seam, showing a thin edge of pink.
