Back of a person with a black and grey traditional style tattoo of roses, clasped hands holding a scroll that reads Everything we left unsaid, and a small coloured rose at the left shoulder, placed

Roses and clasped hands with script across upper back

Traditional · Back · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows three clusters of roses with shaded leaves, arranged across the upper back around two outlined hands clasping a scroll inscribed with the words Everything we left unsaid. One wrist wears a strung pearl bracelet, and a red and green rose is partly visible at the left shoulder edge. The bold outlines and solid black fills suggest a traditional style, with the main design in black and grey against a plain white background.

Dear Mags,

The fair pulled out of Hexham on Tuesday and I still haven't got the sawdust out of my boots. Dad would have laughed to see me standing on the back of the dodgems lorry with a paper cone of pink candyfloss in one hand and your old pearl bracelet in the other, trying to decide which of us was the bigger coward. You always said the rose man sold roses to anyone with a fiver. I never told you he sold me the scroll too, the cheap kind with the gold edge, and I never once wrote anything on it.

So here is what I left out. The night at Morpeth when the generator cut out and you held the lamp for me while I counted the float, you said nothing, and I said nothing, and the whole fairground went quiet except for the carousel running down like a music box. I have kept that quiet for eleven years. I have carried it from Carlisle to Kendal to the coast and back, folded small, the way you fold a letter you are never going to post.

The fair goes to Whitby next month. The rose painter's booth still stands by the big wheel, and I asked him to paint one more rose on the board, a white one, with the leaves gone dark at the edges. He said that was a funny order from a girl who never says anything. I said that was exactly why.

If you come, I will be at the hook-a-duck with the bracelet on. Bring the lamp.

Love, Frankie
