Floral tattoo on hip and waist

Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of a bare midriff and hip with a navel piercing, showing a cluster of shaded flowers that includes a large peony-like bloom and smaller blossoms with stems. The shading is soft and detailed, with fine linework defining the petals, and the flowers sit diagonally across the side of the torso. A hand rests at the right edge and a patterned waistband is visible along the bottom of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The carter had been three days on the high pass when the snow turned his mule back, and it was Ilse who found him at the cairn below Grey Ewe Col, sitting with his back to a boulder and his hands tucked under his arms. She had come up from the terraced farms with a basket of goat cheese and a lantern she did not yet need. He asked her why anyone would walk into weather like this. She said the flowers would not tie themselves to the stones.

Her grandmother had kept a plot of peonies on the lee side of the pass, in soil carried up in leather sacks on the backs of mules, and they bloomed only in the few weeks when the cloud lifted. Pale orchids grew wild in the crevices above, no bigger than a thumbnail, and the old woman had taught Ilse to bind them to bent stems with wet grass so that travellers could see the cairns from the road. Nobody paid for this work. The carters left coins under the stones anyway, and the stones were grateful for the weight.

The carter stayed the night in the hut. In the morning the snow had gone hard and bright, and he looked out at the slope laid out in white and grey, every cairn crowned with a bloom he could not name. He asked if she had made them all herself. She said no, only the ones her grandmother had left her, and the rest had been made by people who had also gone up into the cold and come back down again.

He pressed a peony petal into the lining of his hat without asking, and she let him. At the next thaw, the cairn at Grey Ewe carried a fresh orchid tied with grass, and beneath it lay a coin with a hole bored through its middle, the way a carter might carry one on a string. Ilse put it in her apron and went back down before the cloud came in.
