Script quote and two roses on the ribs
Realism · Ribs · Mixed · Photo
Two red roses with grey shading sit on the side of the torso, one above the other, with a dark linework stem between them. Black cursive script runs down the skin to the right of the roses, reading a multi-line quotation. The roses are sharply detailed and the skin is shown against a plain black background.

Dear Kieran,

Your mum says you've been sleeping on the sofa with the telly on again, so I'm posting you something to look after. Don't laugh. It's a cutting from the red rose by the bins at Aldgate House, the one your grandad planted in a Hovis tin the summer the lifts broke. I wrapped its roots in wet newspaper and the Racing Post, which he'd have appreciated, and it's come through the post looking worse than it is.
Grandad kept a line folded in his wallet for thirty years, written on the back of a bookie's slip in that square biro hand. When you have taken all you can stand, stand firm. Take on the whole armour of God. He wasn't a churchgoer. He said it was the only bit of the Bible that sounded like a foreman.
Put the tin on your windowsill, facing the sun, and water it when the soil goes pale. Don't drown it. Roses are stubborn but they hate being fussed over. Stand firm, love, you hear?
Nan
