Three daisy flowers on a stem down the back
Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows three daisy-like flowers stacked along a single curving stem, with two long leaves branching from the lower part. The petals are drawn with fine, feathered linework and soft grey shading, and the centres are darkened to give depth. The photograph is taken from behind, with the flowers placed centrally on the upper back and the tattoo filling the middle of the frame.

Don't you touch that tiller while I'm talking, Ada, the cut's narrow here and the bank is greedy. Your great-uncle Walter had a stem of daisies painted along the side of the Mary Jane, three heads on one green line, and every bargee on the Grand Union knew whose boat it was before they read the name. He painted them himself with a carpenter's pencil and a jar of lamp black, because paint cost money and daisies cost nothing but patience.

Walter had a rule about daisies. You count the petals, you never count the days. The week Edie went into the hospital at Northampton he was tied up at Stoke Bruerne with half a load of coal still in the hold, and he sat on the cabin step counting petals instead of watching the phone box by the lock. Eleven on the top one, nine on the middle, and the third had lost two to the wind, so he gave them back in pencil.
The leaves took him longest. Two of them, one low on each side, bent the way the stem bends when the water pushes from behind. He said a leaf should look like it is reaching for something it has forgotten the name of. Edie came home in April. She made him repaint the cabin roof white, but she never once asked him to paint the daisies out.
Now pass me the windlass, and mind the lock keeper's dog.
