Cherry blossom tree and open book on upper leg
Botanical · Thigh · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a cherry blossom tree with pink flowers and a twisting dark trunk rising from an open book, with several gold keys hanging from the branches and blue flowers around the base. The linework is soft and the shading uses washed, watercolour-like tones behind the blossoms. Pink, blue, brown and gold dominate the composition, which is framed against the skin with the book at the lower edge.

Sit nearer, where the lamp can find your face. I'll tell you about the tree that grew out of a book at the Lenne pass, because my grandmother saw it with her own eyes, and she never told a lie except to customs men, which she said did not count.

Every week in those years a woman called Marit walked up from the valley with a satchel strapped across her chest. The guards searched everything: letters, salt, boot soles, the lining of your hat. They could not read the books, so they could not tell a ledger from a love poem, and Marit paid her toll with one gold key for every volume she carried over. The keys came from her mother's house, which had been locked since the flood, and nobody on the far side had ever seen the doors they opened.
One February the captain, a thin man called Dorn, took the last book from her satchel and would not give it back. It had a red spine with two faded words stamped on it and pages he could not read. He opened it on the snowy table, and a cherry branch pushed up out of the paper, then another, until the whole post stood under pink blossom in the middle of winter. Marit's keys hung from the twigs, turning slowly, and forget-me-nots crept over the cover like blue frost.
Dorn did not stop her. He stood under the branches until dawn, then let her go, and by morning the book was only a book again. He never forgot her, and that is why the forget-me-nots still grow at the roots. So when you go over the pass, leave something small on a branch and walk on without looking back. The blossom only comes in winter when someone has decided to stay.
