The last pear tree at Hollin End had already dropped its blossom by the time the letter came, so Ada read it standing in the lane with petals stuck to her wrists. Tom's handwriting leaned the way it always did when he was tired, the lines running downhill towards the margin as if they wanted off the page.

He had written only the one sentence he could be sure of. You'll be with me wherever I go, he had put, and then he had crossed out the next word three times, so the ink was dark and thick where the ending should be. She knew what the word was. It was the word they had argued over at the kitchen table in March, when the cherry grafts were taking and he wanted to sign on for the Baltic run.

She took the letter inside and pressed it flat in the big atlas between Kent and Denmark, where the binding was loose enough to hold anything. Then she went out with the secateurs and cut a branch from the pink Kanzan that had started as a sapling he dug up in a Dover garden and carried home in a biscuit tin. She pinned the sprig to the back of the envelope with a hairgrip, and the petals turned over in the draught like small pink hearts that couldn't decide which way to fall.

By summer she had grafted forty rootstocks, and she tagged each one with a word he might have used. On the last tag she wrote the missing word in pencil, looked at it for a long time, then rubbed it out so that only she would know it had ever been there.
