Teapot pouring into teacup on thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A grey-shaded teapot tilts to pour into a teacup, with brown liquid spilling from the spout. Pink blossom, orange roses, yellow flowers and green leaves surround the vessels, and small birds sit among the flowers on the teapot body. Bold dark outlines and smooth shading give the piece a neo-traditional look, with colour concentrated in the flowers and greenery.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The village hall smells of urn water and floor polish, and somebody's mum has brought a dented grey teapot from home because the caterers' tea is never right. You see Deborah across the trestle tables before she sees you. She is still holding her cup the way she did in Year Nine, little finger lifted, as if the joke has never worn thin for her. You have not spoken in twenty-two years. The last thing you said to her was on the coach back from Whitby, something about her brother, and you have regretted it every time you have passed a bus stop since.

You lift the pot. It is heavier than it looks, and the lid rattles as you tilt it. The tea comes out dark and too strong, and you tip it a shade too far, so it runs over the rim and down the side of her cup in a brown tongue. Deborah laughs, a real laugh with no edges on it, and reaches for a napkin. "You always did pour like you were late for something," she says.

So you say sorry, properly this time, and pour again, slower. You talk about the cherry tree in the car park that the school planted the year the roof leaked, and she remembers the sparrows that nested in the gutter above the stage and how Mr Harker tried to shoo them with a hockey stick. Outside, the blossom keeps coming down in the wind, pink and careless, and a few petals drift in through the open door and settle on the tables like they have been invited.

She sets her cup down and a single petal sticks to its rim. Neither of you moves to pick it off. "Go on, then," Deborah says, pushing the cup towards you. "Pour me another. I'm not leaving until you've finished the pot."
