Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A winged cherub with a flower-adorned curly head kneels and gently holds a small bird, which it leans towards with its face. The figure is rendered in soft grey shading with smooth gradients on the skin, wings and feathers, and a few lighter highlights on the hair. The tattoo is shown on pale skin with a plain, slightly blurred background, with the figure centred in the frame.

Dear Oriel, the cleaning drones finally managed the north dormitory, so you can stop asking me whether the air still tastes of ozone. It tastes of nothing now, which is worse. Your brother's sparrow came back to the terrace yesterday, the one with the bent left wing that Mother fixed with silver thread. I put out the crumbs you taught me to save from the ration tray, and it ate every one while watching me the way it used to watch you.

The archive council wants the old songbirds moved into the seed vaults before the solar storms in spring. I told them the birds don't travel well, and they said nothing does anymore. So I sat with the file of your field notes all night. Your handwriting gets smaller every page, as if you were afraid of running out of paper, which you always were. You wrote that the bird would only settle on a palm held perfectly still, and that the small winged child in the old mural on the sealed chapel wall was doing exactly that, leaning in to listen to it.

I climbed up to the chapel this morning with a torch and a brush. The plaster has cracked along the child's curls, but the wing and the bird's breast are still whole, grey as river stones. I sat beside them for an hour and did nothing at all, holding my hand out flat on my knee. The sparrow came down, and I did not move, and I think that is what you were trying to tell me the whole time. Come home before the storms. There is a bird waiting for you, and I have stopped being brave enough to keep it alone. Yours, Imre.
